  • The name derives from the location of the original Metropolitan Police headquarters at 4 Whitehall Place. This had a rear entrance on a street known as Great Scotland Yard.¬†This entrance became the public entrance to the police station, and over time the street and the Metropolitan Police became synonymous.

To many around the world, the Yard is immortalised in the novels regarding Sherlock Holmes. Inspector Lestrade, of Scotland Yard, is often referred to as consulting Holmes for assistance.

In modern times, specifically the year 2013,  New Scotland Yard moved from Broadway. The destination being Victoria Embankment, where it operates today.
